✨ H.W. Mountz teachers in action!✨
Our awesome staff spent Monday afternoon learning with Kate Sullivan, diving into Opportunities to Respond (OTRs) and other high-impact teaching strategies that keep every student thinking, talking, and actively participating.

These strategies mean more voices heard, more brains engaged, and more moments where students are truly part of the learning. We’re so excited to see these ideas come alive in classrooms and help create powerful, memorable learning experiences for our kids!

As part of Storytelling Week, our 3rd–8th graders celebrated the joy of storytelling yesterday with an awesome workshop led by cartoonist and graphic novelist Mike Dawson! 📚✏️

Students explored doodling, character design, and visual storytelling—turning moments from their own lives into original comics. It was a fun, creative reminder that everyone has a story worth telling.

Huge thank you to our PTA for sponsoring this fantastic experience and supporting creativity, reading, and student voice! 🖤🧡👏

Congratulations to our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade TIDE students who are competing in the NJSBA STEAM Tank Entrepreneurial Challenge. The students, working in two separate teams, have submitted their initial proposals and have been notified of their advancement to the Regional level of the competition.

The STEAM Tank Challenge was designed to inspire, engage, and motivate students to nurture problem solving skills and foster collaboration as they brainstorm ideas for a sustainable solution to a real-world problem. This year's teams are: Lantern Byes and Crochet Your Way.

Team Lantern Byes is composed of a few third and fourth grade students. Their product is a kit which will assist beachgoers and other outdoor enthusiasts in the destruction of Spotted Lantern Flies in a manner that will preserve shoes, bare feet and hands.

In contrast, Team Crochet Your Way, consisting of two fifth grade students, is designing a product that is geared towards indoor recreation. Their product idea is to design a crochet hook that is more comfortable for young people to use, thereby making the hobby more appealing and hopefully enticing children away from devices.

As they move forward in the competition, they will utilize the design and engineering process to build, test and modify prototypes for their designs. They will then have an opportunity to present their research and prototypes to a panel of judges from the New Jersey School Board Association. Our two teams have already made their mark and we are confident that they will continue to proudly and positively represent Mountz as they proceed through the competition.

Our school's National Junior Honor Society hosted an amazing fundraiser to support families in Monmouth and Ocean County who are food insecure. Students purchased raffle tickets to be an "Administrator for the Day." With these efforts, our students were able to raise over $950 which provided over 2800 meals to families. Our lucky winners got to spend the day with our three administrators, serving as Superintendent/Business Administrator, Principal, and Supervisor of Student Services.
Congratulations to our Administrators for the Day — we are truly lucky to have them as both leaders and students here at Mountz!

Written for the Tiger Times by Myla S.:

Think back to the last time you had a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, did you know that some kids have never even tried PB&J before! This is where H. W. Mountz Elementary School comes in. We collected peanut butter and jelly cans to donate to Monmouth and Ocean County’s Fulfill Foodbank. This drive was run by Mrs. Dettlinger and the National Junior Honor Society.
On Wednesday, December 17, the National Junior Honor Society also held a hot cocoa sale to collect money for Fulfill as well. All total, the NJHS collected 194 pounds of peanut butter and jelly. This equates to $1,065 which will provide 3,352 meals. Well Done, NJHS!

Mountz Students Lead the Way in Digital Citizenship

At HW Mountz, students are learning what it means to be smart, safe, and kind online as part of our schoolwide focus on digital citizenship. Our K–2 students explored how to protect personal information, make thoughtful choices when using technology, and show kindness in online spaces. Their classwork highlights the importance of being responsible digital citizens, even at a young age. The highlight of our DC lesson was when the students and Miss Ping created a rap, sharing how to be safe online!

Taking this initiative a step further, our seventh-grade students became digital role models by creating educational flyers and videos for peers in grades K–2, 3–5, and 6–8. The students wrote their own scripts, filmed and edited the videos, and designed flyers featuring QR codes that link directly to their final projects. Each flyer includes age-appropriate tips and information about online safety and positive digital behavior.

Together, our students are showing that good digital citizenship starts with being smart, safe, and kind—both online and off.
