Early in 2023, the Spring Lake Board of Education called on the school’s administration and middle school math department to further refine programming to ensure sequential exposure to all standards while creatively challenging students to reach their highest potential.

In response, the team developed the following guidelines and protocols:

Grades 5-8:

  1. Pre-test students prior to each unit of study in order to determine who shows mastery of forthcoming standards

  2. Design lessons to separate, or further challenge those who show mastery by exposing them to the next grade level’s standards

  3. Monitor and track the progress of all students by updating progression rubrics

  4. In the spring prior to the following school year, use charted data to project future placement (see chart below)

  5. Make contact with the families of students who have shown independent progress beyond their peers in order to invite those students to summer math acceleration (yellow ovals below represent summer math classes)

  6. Offer end of summer advance assessment

  7. Offer multiple means of advancing from the traditional pathway of 6M, 7M, 8Pre-Algebra for students who demonstrate independent desire and motivation
